Project Create
Playful world-building systems for spatial computing.
Project Create was a playful spatial computing experience for Magic Leap One, built around the idea of placing, painting, and interacting with virtual worlds inside a users physical space.
My work focused on helping define the visual language, asset systems, scale rules, and production approach needed to make playful virtual worlds feel readable, performant, and alive in AR.
Featured Trailer
The Project Create trailer shows the experience in action - painting playful worlds into physical space using Magic Leap One.
Fun detail: I am the person using the device in the trailer.
01Context
Project Create explored how playful digital worlds could inhabit real rooms. Instead of building for a fixed screen, the team had to think about scale, placement, readability, and how assets would behave across floors, walls, and ceilings.
02My Role
Lead Environment Artist / 3D Lead
- Art style exploration
- Environment and asset direction
- World-building systems
- Team feedback and quality bar
- 3D modeling and texturing
- Optimization for Magic Leap One
- Collaboration with design, art direction, and engineering
My role was a mix of leadership and hands-on production - helping define how the world should look, how assets should behave in space, and how the content could hold up on early spatial computing hardware.
03World Brush
One of the core systems was the World Brush - a playful tool for painting virtual ecosystems into the users physical environment. The challenge was making the interaction feel expressive while keeping placement predictable and readable.
04Wall / Ceiling Placement
Because the experience existed inside a real room, assets needed to respond to different surfaces. Placement logic had to account for floors, walls, and ceilings while still feeling intuitive to the player.
05Spatial R&D
Early R&D focused on scale, asset behavior, readability, and how playful world pieces could sit inside a users physical space without becoming visually noisy.
06Production Systems
Performance shaped many art decisions. Shared textures, simplified silhouettes, reusable asset strategies, and careful material choices helped support a broad asset library on Magic Leap One.
07Final Assets
The final asset sets brought together the visual language, placement rules, and production constraints into a playful library of interactive world-building pieces.
08Outcome
Project Create became a playful spatial experience that showed how virtual worlds could be placed, arranged, and explored inside a real room.
The project was recognized with an Auggie Award for Best Game or Toy. This was a team achievement across design, art, engineering, audio, and production.
