This year's GDC was all about Virtual Reality (VR), it is without a doubt where the industry is heading in the next coming years. With a major new challenger jumping into the battle. Valve.
So far, it has been Oculus and Project Morpheus (Sony) heading this race, but with Valve jumping into the mix things will get interesting. I've heard some awesome experiences from friends that went to GDC this year about how amazing VR is.
Even though VR was king this GDC, these next 3 points also made a lots of noise when they were revealed.
- Unreal Engine 4 is now free! It used to be $20/month. (more details here)
- Unity 5 is out, and the Pro version is free! For game dev you can look here for more info about their pricing
- Marmoset introduced Marmoset Viewer which now lets you show your work on a browser and mobile devices, it looks amazing and its a free update for current users. This will be a great tool for portfolios!
As a game dev, I'm very excited about all this new coming technology and how accessible they've made it for whoever wants to give it a try.
There you have it, these are the events from GDC that caught my attention! What was your favorite news ?
Wishing you the best in your career.
